Tooth whitening
Tooth whitening
Tooth whitening is a topic that interests more and more people. That is why tooth whitening is starting to become a profitable business and that is why it is starting to be offered not only by dentists but also beauty salons. There has been a change in the legislation concerning tooth whitening since 31.10.2012. That is why I tried to summarize this complex topic.
There are 3 otpions of whitening
1.Whitening at home with the supervision of a dentist
The dentist first takes impressions. In the lab we create a mouthguard to hold the whitening solution in place. Into this mouthguard the patient applies the whitening solution once a day, usually overnight and wears it to let it work. The tooth whitening takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on the final shade. This type of tooth whitening, including the impressions, mouthguard, whitening solution and instructions cost 1850CZK per jaw.

2. Whitening at the dentist's office
There are many techniques for whitening in the office. They all use different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide ranging from 25% to 45%. Home whitening products usually contain around 3%. Thanks to this high concentration, office whitening is very effective. It takes 45 – 90 minutes depending on the specific type of whitening.

3. Over the counter tooth whitening products
You can buy them in pharmacies, drugstores, supermarkets, everywhere. The package contains a foil which you put into hot water to soften it and then apply to your teeth to create their shape which substitutes for a mouthguard made in the lab for carrying whitening solution. This type of mouthguard is the main problem of this option. But more importantly over the counter whitening products do not work.

Other types of tooth whitening
Tooth whitening is a current phenomenon. People find information for example in online discussions where there are many sure ways how to whiten your teeth, if possibly for free. In most cases they are nonsense. If after this type of advice the teeth end up being cleaner and more importantly undamaged, it is the better case. But what unfortunately often happens is that people damage their teeth and the following treatment or new crowns cost much more than professionally done tooth whitening done by a dentist would have cost.
